Known for its smartphones and connected objects, the Chinese Xiaomi will diversify its activities and embark on the automobile, with a first electric car to come.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun announced the birth ofa new subsidiary of his group, specialized in automotive. With an initial investment of 10 billion yuan (equivalent to about 1.3 billion euros), the company will specialize in “smart” electric cars, and plans to invest up to 10 billion euros. dollars (8.4 billion euros) in the coming decade to develop its products.
After having invested in the personal mobility sector with Ninebot and the takeover of Segway, in particular giving birth to a kart designed in collaboration with Lamborghini, Xiaomi is therefore cutting the grass under the feet of its competitors Apple and Huawei, by launching itself on the electric vehicle market. Although few details have yet been unveiled, the firm will rely on its experience of new technologies to offer them on board its cars, while capitalizing on the power of its brand and its loyal customers.
Future 100% electric Xiaomi: a sedan or an SUV?
According to the boss of Xiaomi, the first model of his future brand of electric vehicles would be either a sedan or an SUV, which will first be marketed in China at a price of between 100,000 and 300,000 yuan, the equivalent of 12,900 to 38,600 euros. A rather wide price range, which opens the field to many possibilities.
On the Chinese social network Weibo, Lei Jun also broadcast several surveys among Xiaomi fans, in order to find out what their automobile preferences would be. A large majority of them praised a sedan or an SUV, at a price of less than 100,000 yuan (12,900 euros) and bearing the Xiaomi brand.
