Why does the new restyled Tesla Model S have a steering wheel worthy of a sci-fi movie or a Formula 1? Attempts at explanations.
Tesla has just lifted the veil on the restyled version of its large Model S sedan. This new Model S has a new top-of-the-range version “Plaid +” whose theoretical performance makes you dizzy: with its 0 to 100 km / h shot in less of 2.1 seconds, it would ridicule a Bugatti Chiron of 1,500 horsepower at startup. It also claims a maximum power of 1,100 horsepower and a record range of 840 kilometers.
But the other surprising element of this restyled Model S is hidden inside. In addition to a redesigned dashboard, decked out with two new state-of-the-art touch screens, it’s impossible not to notice the incredible rimless steering wheel, worthy of a Formula 1 (or the world of science fiction films) . How can a car manufacturer with a premium vocation, rival of Mercedes or BMW, dare such a radical style element in a family sedan?
Internet is looking for an explanation
As is often the case, the answers available on the Internet are not lacking in creativity. The specialists of Garage des Blogs, for example, are surprised at the similarity between the design of this steering wheel and the silhouette of the blob. But the explanation that appeals to us the most was spotted by Pierre Desjardins on the Tesla Owner Club France Facebook group. A certain Alan Spade writes there that Elon Musk installed this steering wheel for a specific reason: “to warn the drivers of the car about its performance, and thus to avoid surprised drivers finding themselves in the scenery because of its power “. Hence the logic of installing such a strange steering wheel.
Note however that this steering wheel, which perfectly illustrates the fascinating personality of Elon Musk, is in the crosshairs of the NHTSA (the body which verifies the legality of cars) in the United States. Will the Model S have to go back to a more classic steering wheel for legal reasons?
