For several weeks now, the McLaren 765 LT has been the queen of drag races. It pulverizes all its competitors. It took a supercharged Mustang Shelby GT500 to scare him.
The McLaren 765 LT has proven to be the fastest production vehicle on the planet in recent times. Indeed, although unofficial, it is the British supercar that holds the record for the fastest production car over the quarter mile (400 meters standing start). But the owner of a heavily modified Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 in the United States believed he could overtake the British supercar.
As standard, the Shelby GT500 packs a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 developing 771 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, which makes it one of the most powerful cars currently on sale. However, such a remarkable figure was clearly not enough for this owner. So he made a number of changes to it, including installing an improved compressor. The car also has a new exhaust system and runs on specific fuel which gives it 1,250 horsepower, simply on the rear wheels.
Stronger than the queen?
To put that number into perspective, Brooks’ McLaren 765LT from DragTimes on YouTube is completely original. In theory, that should mean its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 delivers 765 horsepower., but dynamometer tests suggest it develops over 850 horsepower. Either way, it is at a disadvantage compared to the Ford.
The two competitors faced each other over five races and throughout these, they remained neck and neck. In one of them the McLaren beats the Ford by just 0.01 seconds, although in all races, the Ford has been consistently faster, recording times around 9.3 or 9.4 seconds to complete the quarter mile. However, once passed through the “tuning” box with a specific exhaust, the 765 LT beats the GT500. You shouldn’t bother a McLaren too much though!
