With the Power Road system, the company Eurovia offers an intelligent road, making it possible to recover solar energy in order to automatically heat the road in winter.
Snowy and icy roads in winter, soon a distant memory? An innovative solution called “Power Road” is proposed by the company Eurovia, a subsidiary of the Vinci group: this allows a road to be heated automatically, in order to prevent any deposit of snow or ice on the road.
In practice, this system is capable of capture the energy of solar radiation absorbed by the road, airport tarmacs or office or shopping center car parks, then stored in geothermal wells, and finally returned via a heat pump system.
The end of the nightmare for road users!
The energy thus produced can then be used to heat buildings, businesses, swimming pools or even infrastructures, such as roads. In that case, the solution works like underfloor heating : a network of pipes hidden under the tar is used to convey heat in order to warm the road, thus making unnecessary any snow removal or road salting intervention, or even the use of snow tires.
Tested for two years, with around ten projects in France and Europe : in Yvelines, Doubs, Hérault, Calvados, Loire, or even in Prague in the Czech Republic, this technology was recently installed and successfully put into service in the municipality of Égletons in Corrèze since the month of December 2020, on a 120-meter section of a street, or 660 m² of roadway.
But this Eurovia “positive energy” road technology is still expensive: indeed, this installation will have cost a trifle of 250,000 euros. A budget, however, to be compared to the savings made in the long term on the acquisition and maintenance of snow removal and salting equipment.
