Supposed to make us respect the rules, they sometimes break free from them. On the menu: chain flashes, rough tuning, hidden signs … Here is an overview of the hackneyed radars.

No one is infallible … and especially not those thousands of devices that crackle tens of thousands of times a day! The latest ANTAI * annual report proves it: only 65% of the 19 million flashes issued for French registrations gave rise to a notice of contravention. So yes, a good part of the unprocessed cracklings result from degradation, in particular when the “cellophane” radars take unusable photos. However, cabin obstructions or even the illegibility of a few license plates alone do not justify the differential of over 6 million.

Private radar cars are coming to new regions

Not so rare mistakes

Indeed, human errors or electronic bugs are also at the origin of non “transformed” flashes. The administration is sometimes aware of the mistakes, backtracking just after having sanctioned an offense. On the site Radars-auto.com, many Internet users thus report having received a PV, then an exemption notice … without even having issued a dispute. But often the system also gets carried away and nothing slows it down. As evidenced by these motorists who receive several tickets (up to 55!) Without having committed the slightest offense. Nerd! After reading all the anecdotes – not at all anecdotal – that we have identified, there is no doubt that you will carefully follow the advice given by Auto Plus for years: never rush to pay a ticket. Especially if you doubt you have committed any fault!

Crazy radars: flashes galore

It gust dry! Completely out of order, radars flash all the time, regularly making the headlines of the regional press. In question, a bug which pushes them to flash all the cars which pass by there, without exception. Generally, when the activity of a booth is abnormal, an alarm escalates warns the Rennes processing center, which deactivates the radar remotely, the time to resolve the problem.

> Or – The A35 radar in Strasbourg went into burst mode on February 15 at the end of the afternoon. Ditto in Condrieu (69): on February 23, the radar photographed everything that moved! Finally, in Nevers (58), in January, the old fixed speed camera, installed in 2005 on Boulevard du Maréchal-Leclerc, began to flash all vehicles traveling above 40 km / h … while the speed is limited to 50 km / h.

Gluttons: rather twice than one

You have exceeded the authorized speed … Be careful not to be penalized twice for the same offense! It happened to a certain Philippe M., flashed at 52 km / h (selected speed) instead of the regulatory 50 km / h, who was entitled to a double ration: two fines and twice a point withdrawn.

> Or – When you cross Vault-de-Lugny (89), it is better to watch your counter. Not only are the two devices positioned opposite each other in the hamlet of Valloux among the radars that flash the most in the department, but they distribute double fines. In recent weeks, a turret radar configured to control both directions of traffic has replaced one of the two “classic” cabins. Thus, when you drive towards Auxerre, the old cabin flashes you from the rear, while the turret radar flashes you from the front. Result: You receive two tickets for the same offense.

Badly regulated: they are rampant at the authorized pace

Configured at the wrong speed. In these cases, the error is of human origin: the technician or the police have incorrectly adjusted the machine.

> Or – Recently, a motorist was flashed by a mobile radar (owl type) at more than 50 km / h (68 km / h exactly) on boulevard Léo-Lagrange de Draguignan (83). Still, he was driving at the right speed. But the police did not realize that the axis in question was limited to 70 km / h! Similar example in Vendargues (34), where, this time, the police are not involved: it is the technician who incorrectly calibrated the site radar. Which continued to prevail beyond 80 km / h while the zone had returned to 90 km / h for weeks. Contested, the minutes were canceled … which is not always the case.

Discriminants: lack of discernment

Light vehicles mistaken for trucks. Drivers flashed while traveling at the right speed are legion. Admittedly, this is not followed up (no fine in sight), but it remains unpleasant. The phenomenon particularly affects discriminating radars.

> Or – In particular on the A1 in Chamant (60), on the A26 in Luyères (10) or on the RN12 in Plounévez-Moëdec (22). Often, these badly named discriminators flash a slightly tall car or a van which they take for a heavy vehicle, subject to a lower speed limit. Fortunately (if we can say so …), these not very subtle devices are sent disappear, replaced by double-sided radars equipped with a more effective technology to differentiate the vehicles.

Dingo turrets: the unpredictable

Azimute radars that crackle for no reason but shamelessly punish. Apparently, no tuning faults, yet even motorists driving in step are fined!

> Or – Last fall, several users sounded the alarm in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (83). Although the turret radar flashed for no reason, the fines were raining down. A motorist even received 55 PV within a few days. And yet, the first reports date back to March 2020! In the same vein, another turret radar was malfunctioning at Nantua (01). Several thousand PVs were distributed in a few months. For the “offenders”, these turrets have without a shadow of a doubt a technical problem. This is not the opinion of the prefectures, for which these radars work perfectly! Result, the regulars roll in step (not to point out). And some have completely changed their route to no longer cross the damn machines.

Unsuspected: “perverse” radars

Placed just before a new limitation, they are confusing and very productive. Keep an eye out!

> Or – On the N83, in the towns of Arsures (39) and Chouzelot (25), autonomous radars are located, as if by chance, just upstream of the signs which increase the limitation to 90 km / h. However, even if the offense is only played a few tens of meters away, the penalty falls! Another nice trap, on the D938, near Baugé-en-Anjou (49): the entire axis has returned to 90 km / h, but the authorities have decided that the limitation drops to 80 km / h one kilometer before entering the town. And, of course, they had a radar placed there. A moment of inattention is enough not to see the sign: guaranteed flash! Finally, a typical case of perverse radar, that of Gouffern-en-Auge (61), installed barely 10 m before the end of a limit to 50 km / h. Previously, the term of the zone was materialized by a crossed out “50” sign, but it has been replaced by another indicating “90” (photo). This encourages motorists to accelerate …

In “loucedé”: they advance masked

Invisible panels … Difficult to respect the speed when the signaling is lacking.

> Or – In the spring of 2020, on the A3, the autonomous radar located in Montreuil (93) crackled damnily. And for good reason: in this site area, the sign limiting the speed to 50 km / h was masked for several weeks by tall grass. It took a strong mobilization to cancel no less than 100,000 PV! Ditto on the N1104, at Mesnil-Amelot (77): the temporary sign limiting the speed to 50 km / h was lying on the ground for several days. Same cause, same effect, the tickets were canceled.

Autonomous sedentary people

They drag on. Autonomous radars (called site) are designed to be moved regularly in danger or work areas. Yet some of them are taking root.

> Or – The most telling example is the cabin of the A15 located in Cergy (95). It has not moved since its installation behind a panel on February 9, 2016! Still in Val-d’Oise, on the A115 in Frépillon, another has been playing extra time since April 2016. And what about those that are installed in work areas that never end? This is the case with the radar located in the Marange-Silvange crossing (57) since August 2017 or that of the A3 just before the entrance to the Bagnolet tunnel (93), which has not moved since May. 2017.

Weird: the indulgent

There are radars that punish (that’s the goal), those who are zealous (it’s infuriating) and others. They are rarer but they only verbalize from a speed higher (!) Than that authorized. In general, the dysregulation does not last.

> Or – Rue de Maubeuge in Paris, in the zone limited to 30 km / h, the radar only flashes from 50 km / h. Possible explanation: the installation of the panel is not legal and “zone 30” would then begin after the radar. Same story in Pierre-Bénite (69), where a radar is rife above 90 km / h in an area limited to 70 km / h. But the bug seems to be resolved for a few weeks: motorists now receive tickets for speeding from 72 km / h. Also in the Lyon region, on the M7 at La Mulatière, a motorist said last year that the ticketing intervened beyond 70 km / h, instead of the regulatory 50. Except that the testimonies here are not numerous. A malfunction surely resolved since!
