The road safety figures for the year 2020 are known! According to estimates from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR), 2,550 people lost their lives on the roads of mainland France in 2020, or nearly 700 fewer deaths than last year, which represents a decrease of -21.4%.
A historic low linked to the pandemic
This historically low figure is obviously linked to the health crisis. The various episodes of confinement severely limited car traffic, which inevitably reduced the number of deaths on the roads.
“The exceptional nature of this decrease should be put into perspective due to the context of the health crisis which led to travel restriction measures which had massive effects on road traffic”, confirms Marie Gautier-Melleray, Interministerial Delegate for Road Safety.
Decreasing mortality, regardless of vehicle type and age
The decline in mortality was particularly strong among motorists, with 379 fewer fatalities than in 2019, or -23% (1,243 deaths in 2020).
At the same time, the mortality of motorized two-wheelers (577 deaths, 36 mopeds and 136 motorcyclists less), that of pedestrians (389 people killed, that is to say 94 less killed) and that of cyclists (174 people died, or 13 less). ), have also declined.
Road fatalities also decrease regardless of the age of users, with the exception of children and adolescents under 18, whose estimated number of fatalities is stable (153 fatalities in 2020).
Fewer accidents, fewer injuries
In the same logic, the decrease in mortality was accompanied by a drop in all the other road accident indicators, compared to 2019: the number of bodily accidents fell by -19.7% with 44,997 accidents ( i.e. 11,019 less than in 2019) and the number of injured people decreased by 20.9% with 55,754 cases recorded (or 14,736 fewer injured).
