A debate between manufacturers of plates and sellers of regional stickers was settled by the Court of Cassation.
Many on the road have decided to replace the regional identifiers on their license plates with the symbol of another department, using a sticker. Indeed, since the changeover to the new plates in 2009, a small space has been reserved for the department number, and an icon representing the region.
And since this identifier is no longer part of the plate itself, it was until then tolerated to cover it with a sticker representing the department of its choice. A possibility that did not amuse license plate manufacturers, who then missed a certain windfall. And the conflict between the latter and the sticker sellers was finally settled by the Court of Cassation at the start of the year: we will have to take off.
Up to € 750 fine!
Indeed, since the judgment of the Court, any owner whose identifier has been covered with a sticker will now be in violation of “circulation with a non-compliant license plate”. This offense, which also covers the cases of dirty or damaged plates, will cost you 135 €, and up to 750 € in the event of a repeat offense.
If you have one of these stickers, you need to peel it off as soon as possible. And verify that it is not the case if you bought a car recently. If you want to represent the department of your choice on your plate, there is only one solution: to change it. They will cost you 65 € a pair.
