F1 drivers are decidedly fond of rallying. While Valtteri Bottas spent part of his winter break on the Arctic Rally driving a DS 3 WRC, in the past big names like Kimi Raikkönen and Robert Kubica have also been able to demonstrate their improvisational skills on special.

A very different pleasure that Esteban Ocon was able to experience at the start of the Monte Carlo Rally. The French driver got behind the wheel of an Alpine A110 S to open the first two stages of the rally. It was also the opportunity for him to make his first outing as an official Alpine driver, and no longer Renault.

Ogier, unleashed, takes the lead

Behind this luxury opener, the battle for victory on the first rally of the season (and probably the most prestigious) rages on. Sébastien Ogier encountered brake problems during the first stages, the pedal sometimes sinking to the floor, without response. Driving carefully, he let go of 17s in two stages, against a very fit Ott Tänak (Hyundai).

But once the problem had been fixed, the Frenchman showed a superb burst of speed, to regain the lead of the race on the second day. At the end of the fifth stage, he has more than 11 seconds ahead of his Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans, and almost 25 seconds over Ott Tänak.

The very first stage was marked by the spectacular crash of M-Sport Ford driver Teemu Suninen, who rolled over after understeering in a hillock. The crew is unharmed.
