According to rumors, a Mercedes-Benz city car would be under study, and would complete the range under the A-Class, in order to offer an access version to the brand with the star.
Launched in 1997, the first Mercedes A-Class surfed the wave of city minivans, and offered, for the first time in the history of the German manufacturer, an urban vehicle.
Since then, four generations have followed one another, the Class A has grown and has become a compact sedan, which with its 4.42 meters long has little to do with the 3.58 meters of the initial model.
A future Class A City city car coming to Mercedes?
According to our colleagues from Auto Bild, a city car would be under study at Mercedes and would be marketed from next year. Smaller than the current Class A, this could be called “In City“: for this, the Class A platform would be shortened to obtain a small model with three doors, in the spirit of the Mercedes-Benz EQA concept car.
However, the versatile city car segment remains difficult to make profitable for a premium manufacturer like Mercedes-Benz. To achieve this, it could also form a partnership with another more generalist manufacturer: the opportunity to broaden its collaboration with Renault, for example?
Anyway, this hypothetical future city dweller will accompany all a range of new products planned for the coming years, including a “Class A Adventure”, crossover variation of the Mercedes Class A, or the new generation of the Mercedes Class C.
