While the style of the latest Citroëns is the subject of much ink, will that of the new DS 4 allow the French premium brand to beat Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz?
In terms of design, the PSA group has been blowing hot and cold for a few months. At Peugeot, everyone seems to be crazy about the latest stylistic developments in the range. The 3008, 2008 and other 208s are snapping up like hot cakes and the image of the lion brand is soaring. At Citroën, on the other hand, the results are less obvious. Whether for the latest C4 or the recent restyled C3 Aircross, the strange stylistic language is debated. Of course, the chevron brand has built its legend on models with particularly original lines. The very first DS remains regarded to this day as one of the most beautiful cars of all time by most designers. But not sure that against its competitors (Peugeot 308, Volkswagen Golf, Renault Megane), this new C4 so confusing to look at does not manage to provoke a lot of love at first sight.
This image problem also affects the DS Automobile brand, the premium division of PSA (now a link with Stellantis). After a relatively consensual DS 7 Crossback and a daring but divisive DS 3 Crossback, the new top-of-the-range DS 9 also seems to divide opinions. With the very last DS 4, has the manufacturer managed to find its balance?
Better than at Audi, Mercedes or BMW?
Reactions to the presentation of the new compact with premium vocation from DS Automobile seem indeed fairly unanimous: the features of this rival of the Audi A3, Mercedes Class A and other BMW 1 Series seduce. In addition to a refined interior, the muscular and very sophisticated exterior design works a priori much better than that of the great DS 9. What finally arrive at the stage of stylistic maturity after a few awkward mistakes? Can we prefer the look of the DS 4 over well-established references such as the Mercedes Class A or the Audi A3? It’s up to you to give your opinion on the subject!
