The Frenchman was intractable against a very fit Nasser Al-Attiyah.
Stéphane Peterhansel continues to inscribe his name in the Dakar legend. The Frenchman signed his 14th victory this year, his 8th in cars.
This 2021 edition, which toured Saudi Arabia, saw a fierce clash between Peterhansel’s Mini buggy and Nasser Al-Attiyah’s Toyota 4×4, separated by just 14 minutes after two weeks of racing.
The bunny and the turtle
The famous fable sums up this Dakar 2021 well. Peterhansel, who took the lead of the rally from the second stage, has never come down again in the standings. Behind, Al-Attiyah often seemed much faster with 5 stage wins against just one for the Frenchman. But the impressive consistency of the latter allowed him to thwart the attacks of the Toyota driver.
Behind the two men, Carlos Sainz had to fight to come back after some trouble at the start of the rally, and finished third, more than an hour behind the leaders. A good surprise, however, for Nani Roma, who finished 5th in the brand new BRX buggy. This buggy, which Sébastien Loeb also used before his retirement, was developed in record time and it is therefore good news to see him at the finish.
In motorcycles, the Argentinian Kevin Benavides won for the first time, riding a Honda. This 2021 edition was also marked by the fatal accident of French amateur biker Pierre Cherpin, during the 7th stage.
