April Fool’s Day: a twist within the Renault group: the Formula 1 Alpine will disappear in favor of the Dacia brand, which is preparing its grand arrival in the main discipline. Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon will receive a working Dacia Spring.
As part of his major Renaulution plan, Renault’s new boss Luca de Meo is looking wide for Alpine: the sports brand, which currently markets the A110, will develop a full range of 100% electric models by 2025. And Alpine now embodies the only sports brand of the group, including in motorsport. This is why the Formula 1 Renault Sport were renamed “Alpine” before the start of the 2020 season.
But group policy requires, the Formula 1 team of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance will again change its name. After Renault F1 Team and Alpine F1 Team, it will be Dacia F1 Team from 2022.
Functional Dacia Springs for pilots
“I think it’s high time we stopped associating Dacia with low-cost. Look at the latest Sandero for example, what does it have to envy of a Volkswagen Polo? Even our little electric Spring can beat many city cars on a 0 to 30 km / h green light. The new image of Dacia will go through Formula 1, while Alpine will entrench itself in 100% electric Formula E ”, specifies Luca de Meo in a splashing statement.
Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso, the two talented pilots at ease like fish in water within the French team, have already received their new spring functions. “It’s great, it has a real old-fashioned handbrake to slide in roundabouts”, laughs Fernando Alonso. The Dacia F1 Team will aim for the best possible results with a budget 70% less than that of a premium team, and 30% less than that of a generalist team.
