To celebrate its comeback in Formula 1, Aston Martin has gone all out with the presentation of its new single-seater, the AMR21. James Bond himself was present.
Aston Martin has decided to play it glamorous for the launch of its new F1, the AMR21. The British firm even hired James Bond girl Gemma Arterton to host an event in which 007 himself, aka Daniel Craig, also made an appearance. Named AMR21, the new car will go into action in Bahrain later this month. It will thus put an end to Aston Martin’s 61-year absence in the premier class of motorsport.
Under the traditional Aston Martin Racing Green livery, the single-seater hides a turbocharged Mercedes-AMG F1 M12 E Performance engine with an energy recovery system. The AMR21 is an evolution of last year’s Racing Point RP20, with the team being renamed in January this year. Racing Point owner Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll sparked the switch when he bought 16.7% of Aston Martin for £ 182million (€ 230million).
The great return
“I have dreamed of this day for a very long time,” said Stroll. “I have always been a car enthusiast and have always loved racing too. My first dream was to own a Formula 1 team. My second dream was to acquire a significant stake in Aston Martin Lagonda. Today, it is the fusion of these two dreams. So, like I said, today it’s all about dreams, and it shows that dreams can really come true ”.
Stroll is also the father of the team’s driver, Lance Stroll, who has been partnered with former F1 champion Sebastian Vettel for the 2021 season. The German has spent the last six years with Ferrari, where he did could not rely on the four championships he won to add a title to his record. Vettel will get his first taste of the AMR21 during a testing session at Silverstone on Thursday, but Aston is clear about his chances of glory.
“Let’s be realistic,” said Andrew Green, Technical Director of Aston F1, setting the tone for the year ahead. “We have big ambitions, but we will work to close the gap with the top three and move forward.”
