On the occasion of the Equip Auto 2019 Show, the manufacturer Continental presented two very innovative concepts: ContiSense and ContiAdapt. ContiSense uses an intelligent tread capable of detecting critical data and transmitting it to the driver. ContiAdapt adapts to weather and driving conditions in real time. Thanks to these technologies, road safety will be even more important.
Thanks to electrification of the tire tread, the tire is able to continuously monitor wear, tread depth and temperature. An electrified tire? This technology is based on the development of mixtures of conductive gums which allow the sending of electrical signals. These signals are transmitted by a sensor located in the tire to a receiver in the vehicle.
If the measured data is above or below the preset limits, the sensors instantly warn the driver. It is also informed if a foreign object enters the tread. This technology is much faster than the systems used so far. In fact, current systems warn the driver when the tire pressure has already started to drop, while with ContiSense the information is transmitted.

If Continental does a good job with ContiSense, the ContiAdapt technology is even more impressive. In fact, ContiAdapt “adapts” the contact surface of the tire on the road, depending on traffic conditions and driver preferences. The wheel incorporates micro-compressors to adjust the tire pressure with a variable width rim. This technology can therefore modify the contact area of the tire. Like ContiSense, this concept improves safety and comfort.
ContiAdapt offers four different combinations to match the road perfectly: wet, rough, slippery and normal. Indeed, on a completely dry road, a reduced contact area as well as a higher pressure allows a low resistance and an eco-driving.
Continental invests heavily in research and development every year. It is now to be hoped that these revolutionary tires will quickly pass the concept stage.
